Suzaku and Euphemia
Euphemia falls out of the blue into Suzaku's life. From a balcony which she was foolishly jumping out of, might I add. It's just lucky her knight was there to catch her.
But that's not the relationship they have. The Knight in Shining Armour who always saves Euphemia, that's not Suzaku. The fair, damsel in distress who always needs Suzaku, that's not Euphemia. There are more times that Euphemia has saved Suzaku than Suzaku has saved Euphemia. In Stage 20, Kyūshū Combat, Euphemia saves Suzaku by telling him not to hate himself. He had hidden all this guilt and hatred for himself ever since he killed his father, and I believe these words broke down a mental barrier for Suzaku. Somebody who knew so many of Suzaku's faults, asked him not to hate himself, because she herself cared for him so much.
Throughout the series, Euphemia and Suzaku are completely honest with each other. There was nothing hidden between them. Where Suzaku wouldn't tell Lelouch or Nunnally that he was Lancelot's pilot, Euphemia had full knowledge of this. Suzaku's most troubling and buried secret, that he killed his own father, was something he shared with Euphemia. Their romantic relationship is arguable, but no one can deny they trust they had with each other.
Was it love? As friends there is no doubt that the love was there; they cared for each other, put their lives in peril for each other, and had complete faith in each other. Was this a good friendship, or a passionate romance? In Stage 20, Euphemia confesses her love for him, and asks him to love her. While Suzaku never explicitly states that he will love her, and they never share a passionate kiss or a romantic date or anything like that, to me, Euphemia confesses her love to him; to me, at least Euphemia romantically loves Suzaku. Suzaku on the other hand, never really reciprocates any romantic feelings. Too overwhelmed by her stature as Princess, too preoccupied with his feelings of guilt, too busy with the military and with school.
Most Code Geass fans view these two as a canon romantic couple. Some people are more indifferent, instead viewing Euphemia's confession as a friendship thing. I see it so far as an unrequited love. But when Suzaku grew older, when he left his other tormenting, torturous emotions behind, I feel he easily would have fallen in love with Euphemia (and I don't even like this couple). But of course, he never got the change to
eventually fall in love with her, did he?
Before I mentioned that Euphemia was completely honest with Suzaku. That wasn't completely true I suppose. Euphemia never told Suzaku that Zero was Lelouch. At first, that's probably because she had no idea that Suzaku actually knew Lelouch. Later however, when she found that Suzaku was Lelouch's friend, she still didn't tell Suzaku. This is because she had complete trust in Lelouch as well, a trust that equals, or surpasses her trust with Suzaku. Nonetheless, if Euphemia had been completely honest with Suzaku and told him of Zero's identity, I think Suzaku would have viewed Zero better. He and Euphemia had the same ideals. If Euphemia trusted Lelouch as Zero, then I believe Suzaku would have grown to as well.
But I suppose it was wrong for Euphemia to completely trust Lelouch. He did completely fuck over Area 11 after all. With Lelouch's errors, Euphemia became the Japanese killing machine. Even when Euphemia ordered for all Japanese people to die, Suzaku knew something was wrong. The blood bath wasn't evidence for him, he
knew Euphemia would not have killed all those people. He knew something was wrong.
When Suzaku saw Euphemia shot, he went berserk. He charged in to save her. Kallen's attempt to fight Lancelot was breezed off with Suzaku's need to save Euphemia. On her death bed, Euphemia was still under the influence of Geass. Her eyes glowed red, as she remembered that Suzaku was Japanese, a Japanese person that the Geass ordered her to kill. But she shook her head, and asked herself how she could think like that. Unable to remember what happened, her first concern was of what happened to the Special Administrative Zone she had planned. Suzaku, knowing she was inches from death, let her die happily, telling her that the massacre of her Japan was a great success, that the Japanese people were happy. Knowing that people were happy, that people were smiling, Euphemia closed her eyes. She whispered a few last words of an unfinished sentence, that to her, Suzaku was...
Vengeful, Suzaku becomes a completely different person. For Euphemia, even though it's the last thing she would have wanted, Suzaku becomes a savage monster on the battlefield, ruthlessly taking out soldier not letting anyone stand between him and Euphemia's killer, Zero.
